Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma will miss the rest of the Premier League season and this summer’s Euro 2016 after injuring his right anterior cruciate knee ligament during Sunday’s feisty 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.

Zouma, 21, landed awkwardly after a challenge on United midfielder Marouane Fellaini in the middle of the park and was quickly stretchered from the field amid excruciating pain..

He was seen on crutches after the game and the Blues have now confirmed the France international will undergo surgery for the ACL which is expected to sideline him for the remainder of the season and the continental fiesta to be hosted by his country, France.

“Chelsea Football Club’s medical team have diagnosed that Kurt Zouma sustained an injury to his anterior cruciate ligament during yesterday’s Premier League game against Manchester United,” Chelsea said in a statement.

“Kurt will undergo surgery in the next 48 hours and is expected to be out for approximately six months.”

And Zouma, who has been keeping England centre-back Gary Cahill out of the starting lineup this season, tweeted thanks to his fans for their support and vowed to return stronger after this latest setback.
