Tyson Fury celebrates his win over Wladimir. (IBF) |
In November, Tyson Fury stunned the world when he defeated Wladimir Klitschko, ending the Ukrainian’s 9 1/2-year reign as heavyweight champion, and becoming the WBA, IBF, WBO, IBO and The Ring magazine unified heavyweight champion.
But, the boxer has just been stripped of the IBF title after less than two weeks of winning it.
BBC reports that the 27-year-old had agreed on a fight with IBF’s mandatory challenger Vyacheslav Glazkov, but in a new decision, the boxing champion will now face Wladimir Klitschko in a rematch.
“It’s true he’s been stripped of his IBF belt,” Lindsey Tucker, championships chairman at the IBF, told BBC Sport. “Our challenger was Vyacheslav Glazkov, but instead Fury’s gone and signed a rematch clause with Wladimir Klitschko.”

Meanwhile, Fury, who retains his WBA and WBO belts versions of the heavyweight title, is caught in a storm of controversy following his sexist and homophobic rants.
In an interview in November, Tyson Fury compared homosexuality and abortion to paedophilia, a shocking statement which prompted over 47,000 people to sign a petition demanding his removal from the shortlist of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award for 2015. While the petition is yet to be acknowledged and he remains on the award shortlist, the champion proceeded to make more shocking sexist remarks, saying that a woman’s “best place is on her back.”
Last night, BBC reported that the Greater Manchester Police are now investigating Fury for hate crimes.
“We can confirm that at 10.30am this morning we received a report of a hate crime follow comments made about homosexuality on the Victoria Derbyshire programme,” said a GMP spokesperson. “As with all hate crime we are taking it extremely seriously and will be attending the victim’s address to take a statement in due course.”
