Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has described the feeling that scoring a goal during ‘Fergie Time’ did for the team and the fans.
Ferguson, who retired in the summer of 2013 after winning his 13th league title at Man Utd, made a habit of winning games in the dying moments, especially at Old Trafford. ‘Fergie Time’ was incredible for Man Utd fans and infuriating for opposition supporters and players as it came in the biggest games at the perfect time for the Red Devils.
The former manager has now revealed what the dressing room was like after a late goal – often a winner – and what it was like for the fans heading home after the matches.
“If you’re in that dressing room after the game and we’ve scored in the last minute the electricity is unbelievable, they’re jumping on top of each other, hand clapping, it’s a fantastic place to be,” said Ferguson.
“Most important thing is that those fans are walking out of the stadium desperate to get down to the pub to talk about, desperate to get home to tell their wife and their kids what happened at Old Trafford in the last minute of the game. And that’s my job, to get them home happy.”
There haven’t been many great moments for Man United fans to cheer since Ferguson left after finishing seventh under David Moyes last season but a recent run of excellent results under Louis van Gaal has restored some optimism.
